With their neck and body fully stretched vertically, bill pointing skywards and eyes swivelled forwards, bitterns can stay in this 'skypointing' stance for hours.

Bittern in flight
Bitterns fly with a distinctive owl-like action on broad, round-ended wings. Notice the retracted neck (which appears short and thick) and trailing legs.
