Go mammal mad with WildSquare!

12 March 2008

You will need to try to go out into your Wildsquare once per week on 8 occasions from 31st March to the 29th June. Please try to go as many times as you can, but don't worry if you don't manage 8 visits; you will still be able to submit your results.

There will be an identification and survey sheet for you to download and take with you so you know what to look for. The survey sheet is split into two parts; mammal sightings and tracks and signs. You don't have to do both, but it would be great if you could.

How to look for mammals

Wild animals are very alert and will detect any small movements. It is better to wait quietly somewhere in your Wildsquare and wait to see if you can spot any mammals. You have to make yourself as inconspicuous and non-threatening as possible. Depending where your Wildsquare is, you can watch your mammals from indoors, from a car or by sitting outside in a quiet area.

When to look

The best time is early in the morning or at dusk. Mammals like it at these times because it is a lot quieter and there are less people about. Always go out with an adult and always tell people where you are going.

Where to look

Some of the best places to spot mammals and their tracks are alongside woodland paths, in long grass of verges and field margins, the banks of rivers or puddles on muddy paths.

Get ready for the survey by downloading your indentification and survey sheet now!

Dont forget to come back and submit your results once you have done the survey. The results page will be open from 16th June to 3rd August.

Happy surveying!
