Up with the lark

Skylark on post

Skylarks used to be heard on nearly every farm 30 years ago, but there are half as many now as there once were.

Have you ever heard a skylark singing its bubbly song, whilst hovering high above a field? It’s a lovely sound, which carries on for a few minutes at a time. Many poets and composers have written about the song, saying how beautiful it is.

Spring is the perfect time of year to listen for skylarks. The males are trying to attract females and claim the patch of land where they are going to nest.

You can find them in fields, sand dunes and anywhere where there aren’t too many trees.
