Getting involved

Fieldfare perched in hawthorn
When will you see your first fieldfare of the year?

To see migration in action, get out and about at the right time of year.

In spring, watch out for the first summer visitors along the coast, such as wheatears and sand martins. And in autumn, watch out for the first winter visitors, such as redwings and fieldfares, and late departing summer visitors, such as swallows.

You don’t have to visit special migration ‘hot spots’; your local park will have plenty to show you. When do the first black-headed gulls appear? Are there more starlings in winter than there were in summer?
