Take a closer look
After windy weather, large numbers of birds may turn up in one place at the same time. This is called a 'fall'. Look out for unusual species that may have been swept up with the more common ones – such as a brambling among the chaffinches, or a firecrest among the goldcrests. And if you’re taking a ferry on holiday, look out for small birds hitching a ride. Redstarts, flycatchers, warblers – almost anything may be sheltering on the desk, saving energy before the next leg of the journey. |
