Brambling perched on branch
Look out for bramblings in flocks of chaffinches

After windy weather, large numbers of birds may turn up in one place at the same time. This is called a 'fall'.

Look out for unusual species that may have been swept up with the more common ones – such as a brambling among the chaffinches, or a firecrest among the goldcrests. And if you’re taking a ferry on holiday, look out for small birds hitching a ride. Redstarts, flycatchers, warblers – almost anything may be sheltering on the desk, saving energy before the next leg of the journey.
