World on the move
War and famine in Africa have meant that nearly 14 million people now live in neighbouring countries, unable to return to their country of birth. Many refugees from poor parts of the world come to Europe or America, looking for a fresh start. Most modern cities now contain a rich mixture of peoples from all over the world.
Even within prosperous nations, many people migrate from traditional rural communities in search of a new life in the city. And city life brings its own kinds of migration. As cities become more crowded, property becomes more expensive and so many people are forced to live outside and travel in daily for work.
This is called commuting. Commuters raise their family in one place, but earn their wages in another. So each day they are migrating between the best feeding place and the best breeding place. Just like any other migrating animal.
