Wildlife Action Awards for Families

Connor White with Wildlife Action Award 'gold' certificate

From pond dipping and birdwatching, to making homes for mini-beasts and planting trees, there are plenty of activities to inspire young people as they work their way towards bronze, silver and gold awards.

Connor White, aged 5, achieved a Gold award by taking part in the award scheme with his family. Connor said: 'I really enjoyed feeding the birds, digging in the garden and drawing things from nature.

'I also liked recycling things at the bottle bank. I like hearing the bottles break and it is better to take all the tins and glass to a safe place so it does not hurt the animals and the world.'

Out and about with nature

The youngster who lives in Yardley with his family, has been involved in the award scheme from the age of three, and during his free time you are more likely to find Connor out in the garden building a bug hotel, or in the park doing a bird survey than sitting in front of the television or computer.

Connor is also a member of a Sunday club that meets at a restored Tudor building called Bells Farm in Druids Heath, Birmingham. Along with five other youngsters, and a bit of help from Connor's grandmother, and a few other adults including his mum, they are busy planning and gathering funds to create a sensory wildlife garden for the community to enjoy.

Grandmother Ros Sheard said: 'Connor enjoys making and sticking things. He also enjoys travelling to different parks to see birds and animals, with the added extra of playing outside in the open and making new friends along the way. He has really enjoyed this project and wants to do more.'
