RSPB Saltholme, the popular nature reserve near Stockton-on-Tees, has teamed up with businesses Class Ideas and British Gypsum to launch a creative competition, in celebration of the RSPB’s Big Schools Birdwatch in the Tees Valley. This com
To enter children must draw a picture of their favourite bird and submit it to Class Ideas - who specialise in supplying primary and nursery schools with fun and rewarding products, and are providing some of the prizes for the competition. Staff at RSPB Saltholme will judge the entries and choose a winner, who will be invited to the reserve to receive their prize of £100 worth of craft materials for themselves. They will also win a unique magnetic wall for their school, provided by plaster specialists British Gypsum, and be awarded the title of ‘Avian Art Extraordinaire!’
Aimée Lee, Visitor Experience Manager at RSPB Saltholme said: “If local schools are already taking part in the RSPB Big Schools Birdwatch then this is an excellent opportunity to do some extension work and link the art and science curriculum, be further inspired by the wonderful wildlife they share their school grounds with, plus be in with a chance of winning fabulous prizes from Class Ideas and British Gypsum.”
The RSPB Big Schools Birdwatch, which is running until 23 February, is a chance for children to put down their books and get outside to experience and learn about the nature that lives in their local community. The Birdwatch involves children spending an hour watching and counting the birds that visit their school grounds, before sending the results to the RSPB.
The Big Schools Birdwatch is a free activity and only takes an hour to complete. Teachers can pick any day during the first half of the spring term to take part, with the flexibility to run it as a one off or as the centre piece of a cross-curricular study, project work or a way for the children to improve their outdoor space.
