What screeches, swoops, and scuttles under the cover of darkness? With the nights drawing in, staff and volunteers at RSPB Fairburn Ings near Castleford are inviting families along to a Spooky Stories and craft session at the reserve.
On Wednesday 31 October for Halloween, the Grim Reaper will be sharing tales of horrible history, grisly creatures and things that go bump in the night. Following this, participants can make their own magic wand with natural materials and elements of the story. This costs £5 per child (£4 RSPB members) with accompanying adults free. These sessions are repeated throughout the day - times and booking details here. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/rspb-aire-valley-13775638153
Fairburn Ings also has a Wild Halloween trail running throughout half term. Dark magic lurks in the Discovery Trail; witches and ravens, ghouls and bats. Do you dare...? Families can drop-in throughout the day, pick up a quiz sheet and take part for free (normal car parking fees apply to non-members).
Jan Elsworth, Visitor Experience Manager at Fairburn Ings said: “As the seasons change, the temperatures start to drop and the nights draw in, it can be really easy to curl up in front of the telly, but it really is a magical time of year to explore the great outdoors. We hope to see as many families as possible coming to discover the weird and wonderful creatures here this half term.”
There are also Wild Challenge backpacks available to hire every day (£3 per pack), for budding nature detectives to uncover fascinating creatures. The woodland den building area is also on offer daily to get active and creative.
All of these activities contribute to the RSPB’s Wild Challenge online awards scheme, encouraging families to get closer to the natural world, completing fun, wildlife related activities, learning about nature and earning awards.
Visitors can also pick up everything needed for a delicious picnic as a selection of sandwiches, pies and pasties are available to buy daily, alongside hot and cold drinks plus a range of snacks.
Venue: RSPB Fairburn Ings, RSPB Fairburn Ings Visitor Centre, Newton Lane, Castleford WF10 2BH.
