Dr Jonathan Bell, RSPB NI Head of Land and Sea Policy commented:

"Over 1,100 people personally emailed the Finance Minister, as part of our Revive our World campaign, asking for a Green Recovery Fund to deliver nature-based projects.  We, therefore, welcome the allocation of £2 million of green recovery funding in the budget and would urge the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs to spend this money on nature-based projects and to expand the size of the Fund.

We are also encouraged by the allocation of funding to a Northern Ireland version of the Kickstart Scheme. This is designed to provide employment opportunities for young people and we would like the Department for Communities to use this funding to pilot a Northern Ireland Green Jobs Scheme.

There is mounting evidence demonstrating the critical importance of investing in nature-based projects to rebuild economies, livelihoods and wellbeing. RSPB NI will continue to call on the Finance Minister and other Executive colleagues to establish further green recovery initiatives and deliver on the Executive’s Green New Deal commitment."
