Enjoy a wild adventure and sleep under the stars as part of the RSPB's Big Wild Sleepout

For the fifth year running, children and their families across Wales will be pitching up their tents, rolling out their sleeping bags and gathering round the camp fire as they take a step closer to nature by spending a night out under the stars.

On Saturday 29 July, an extra special Big Wild Sleepout will be taking place on Cardiff's Flat Holm Island3. Families are invited to spend a wild night on the island thanks to RSPB Cymru's Giving Nature a Home in Cardiff project2, funded by the Big Lottery Fund and delivered in partnership with the City of Cardiff Council and BugLife Cymru.

Surrounded by the amazing Severn Estuary, families can enjoy pirate-sized views of Cardiff and its coastline, discover the island's natural treasure on a shoreline safari, hunt for bugs, count the stars, toast marshmallows and enjoy a family camping trip like no other.

Giving Nature a Home in Cardiff's Project Manager, Carolyn Robertson, said: "Whether you're a child or just a big kid at heart, a night under the stars is the perfect time for a wild adventure. We're so excited to be able to offer families this wild island experience - a night we're sure they won't forget and a chance to learn more about Flat Holm's incredible wildlife. From the sea birds that make their home there and the island's myths and legends - it's a truly magical place."

Booking is essential and will be taken on a first come first serve basis. Tickets for adult RSPB members are £25, adult non-members £30, child RSPB member £10 and child non-member £15. All tickets include the return boat crossing, landing fees, camping fees and all guided activities3. To book please visit the website here.

The Big Wild Sleepout is part of the RSPB's Giving Nature a Home campaign, which is aimed at inspiring everyone to do their bit for nature. Rohan - designer and supplier of outdoor clothing and footwear - is once more supporting the RSPB Big Wild Sleepout, which is expected to be the biggest Sleepout yet with over 11,000 families across the UK expected to spend a night in the wild.

2. Giving Nature a Home in Cardiff is RSPB Cymru's flagship project delivered in partnership with the City of Cardiff Council and Buglife Cymru and funded by the Big Lottery Fund until 2022. The project has engaged over 25,000 children and their families across Cardiff with wildlife; encouraging them to connect with the nature on their doorstep and take action to support it. For the third year running, the project is hosting Big Wild Sleepout on Flat Holm Island, in partnership with the City of Cardiff Council.

3. Big Wild Sleepout on Flat Holm: The boats to Flat Holm will be departing from Cardiff Bay Barrage at 08.30 on Saturday 29 July. Click here for details on how to get to Cardiff Bay Barrage and the departure point. Attendees are asked to bring their own tent, sleeping kit, food and drinks. Toilets, hot water, drinking water and indoor space will be available. For more information about facilities please visit the Flat Holm website here. Due to the powerboats we'll be travelling on to the island all children must be at least 1.2 metres in height. Unfortunately there is no disabled access to the island. Dogs are not permitted and all children must be supervised by an adult. In the case of adverse weather, the trip may be cancelled at short notice; RSPB Cymru endeavours to inform you within 24 hours and in the event will provide a full refund. 4. RSPB Cymru is also hosting Big Wild Sleepout events at some of its nature reserves in Wales. For further details on each individual event please follow the links below: RSPB Conwy
