Trash and treasure makes for fantastic fun at Fairhaven Lake this Easter

Monday 27 March 2017

The RSPB Ribble Discovery Centre at Fairhaven Lake are inviting families to burn off those Easter indulgences and dispose of the packaging this school holidays with a treasure hunt and recycled materials boat races.

The centre always has seasonally changing quiz trails running around Fairhaven Lake, and the annual Easter Weekend treasure hunt is a firm favourite. To get involved visit the Ribble Discovery Centre anytime from Good Friday to Easter Monday between 11 am-3 pm. The event costs £3 per non-member team (£2 per RSPB member team). Every child taking part wins chocolate eggs and there is an additional prize for the fastest team.

Claire Critchley, at RSPB Ribble Discovery Centre said: "Everyone loves a treasure hunt especially if there is chocolate at the end of it, so come along this Bank Holiday weekend and try ours. The trail will test your observation skills and the walk will work off your tasty Easter treats, whilst helping you discover more about the Lake and the wildlife that calls this area home."

Also on this Easter holidays are Wild Wednesdays where families can take part in a 'Float your Boat' race. Bring the whole family to the Ribble Discovery Centre on Wednesday 12 and Wednesday 19 April along with any recycling that could be useful for building a boat. The event starts at 1.30 pm but participants can pop along anytime before 3 pm to get some extra recycling to make the perfect vessel. RSPB staff and volunteers will be on hand to help and will have some examples from the natural world. Once the fleet is ready, the race will begin at 3 pm on Fairhaven Lake with a prize for the winning team. The cost is £1 per boat entry.

Claire Critchley added: "The Float your Boat race is back by popular demand as year's was a great success. Everyone is so used to seeing and feeding the ducks and geese on the Fairhaven Lake but finding out how they float was a revelation to some and really inspired them to get explore, have fun and get closer to nature."

On any day throughout the Easter holidays, families can take part in the 'Lovely Leaves' collage and discover more about the variety of leaves that are springing into life around Fairhaven Lake. Drop-in between 10 am-4 pm and the event costs £1 to take part.
