Golden oriole male perched in fig tree

Orioles are boldly patterned, especially in males (and some older females) with much black and yellow in the plumage. They have loud, fluty, musical songs.

They are thrush-like in general form but more elongated, with thicker bills. One species breeds in the UK, but is very rare. There are others in Africa and Asia. American orioles are not closely related. The European species migrates to Africa in winter.
