vat on bird food

This question is not answered
  • I am at a loss to understand why VAT is charged on bird food - I am aware that above a certain weight it is not charged.  I would not consider bird food a "luxury item".   Is there a campaign to change the present regulations?

I'm a Quantity Surveyor and my Partner is an Accountant. Neither of us understand VAT rules, crazy that they are.

I read recently that we may be forced to increase VAT yet again because of the EU financial problems sorting out Portugal, Greece & Ireland.

Personally I feel that we need to drop taxes etc. This would in turn give us more money in our wages and thus in turn give us more money to spend which would increase the revenue collected by the taxman. This would also ensure job security and restart the economy.

Sorry - just a thought and rant over.

"Here here" well said Richard! I could potentially lose about 20%+ of my salary over a three year period with the current cuts and I have to say it doesn't inspire me to go out spending money, in fact we will be shedding all things we can no longer afford such as Sky TV, mobile phones, less fuel miles etc etc so I presume this defeats the object a bit somewhat doesn't it....."batten down the hatches!!"

    Sorry my rant over also!

I disagee, I think bird food is a luxuary itrem as afterall, we don't HAVE to feed the birds we do so because it is something we get enjoyment out of...it isn't something we NEED to buy...

    Hi KatTai

Totally agree and I choose to feed my regular garden visitors but I'll try to buy the best quality for the lowest price. If "no-vat" is correct with the VAT on volume perhaps we (the RSPB community) should club together to bulk buy and all save together.

  • I buy my bird food loose from a small, independent pet shop who told me that if you buy it that way, it's VAT free. So I don't pay any VAT on my bird food!

  • Hi all,

There's no VAT on our 12.75 kg sacks of bird food and you don't pay VAT if you buy loose food instore.

    Hope this is useful.
