The woodpecker that doesn't peck wood

...well, not much anyway. Check out this lean, green, ant-eating machine, captured by Peter Howe during his Big Garden Birdwatch.

Green woodpeckers do nest in trees, but do most of their feeding on the ground, where they devour lots and lots of ants. They have long, sticky tongues which they use to grab their prey.
