Friends Of Abernethy

Be part of something magical Friends of Abernethy is a relatively new group set up in 2011, primarily to raise funds for RSPB Abernethy Reserve, including Loch Garten The Group support the Reserves staff with local community events.. The Group encourages practical volunteering and is active in a variety of fundraising activities including fundraising events. Over the years we have organised a sponsored cycle, a sponsored walk along the length of the River Nethy from confluence with the Spey, through the heart of the reserve to the source of the Nethy high up in the Cairngorms; a plant sale and two Open Garden days and an Afternoon Tea at Forest Lodge.

These activities raise funds for a variety of projects on the reserve, including the tree nursery. We have worked with Reserve staff to organise event days for regular Friends of Abernethy donors. We raise awareness of the RSPB and provide opportunities for volunteers to liaise with the local community through participation in local events. The group also encourages practical volunteering on the reserve. Read about some of our past activities in the News section, and upcoming events in the Events section. If you are local and would like to get involved, please contact Aileen Fox, group leader, aileen.fox@RSPB.org.uk. If you live farther afield and would like to participate by holding your own version of our fundraiser, please contact Jean Burns, treasurer: jean.burns@RSPB.org.uk.

Galloway Local Group

GALLOWAY LOCAL GROUP was formed in 1985. We represent the RSPB in Dumfries and Galloway and, although we meet in Castle Douglas, anyone throughout the region can join us.

If you wish to meet like-minded people and help make a difference for birds and wildlife, please feel free to come to any of our indoor meetings or other events. The yearly subscription is £5 per adult. There is ample parking on Whitepark Road near the Hall. There is limited parking in the yard: please leave this for those who are disabled. The Hall has full disabled access and facilities. We will be meeting monthly on irregular Mondays from September to April inclusive, but please check the programme for dates. We have an interval when refreshments are available and there is a chance to meet and talk to other members. We aim to offer: ·#A friendly welcome to those who are new to the RSPB or new to bird watching. ·#Illustrated monthly wildlife talks through the autumn, winter and spring given by knowledgeable speakers. ·#Occasional field trips and longer outings to reserves and other quality sites. Experienced leaders are on hand to help both new and more advanced birders. ·#A twice-yearly newsletter to all group members. ·#Numerous opportunities to volunteer help at our occasional fund raising activities, with bird surveys and with other RSPB tasks and activities. We are proud of our record as an active group. We have a healthy track record of fund raising for RSPB and have undertaken a wide variety of activities over the years. From time to time we organise art exhibitions and garden openings for the RSPB's important conservation work. We can offer talks to local organisations on: 'Gardening for Wildlife'. To book a talk please contact Pam Pumphrey on 01556 630246. No group is too small, but we do normally ask for a donation. We try to answer questions about our Group or local bird life, but we are a conservation charity and cannot offer welfare or veterinary advice.
