What we're looking for

We're looking for enthusiastic volunteers to form a small team working alongside our staff who manage, monitor and safeguard breeding seabird colonies in Langstone and Chichester Harbour. The main period of our work is between March and July each year but there is the opportunity for less regular tasks & surveys outside this period. Due to the changing tides and weather conditions we aren't able to offer regular days, rather ad hoc as conditions allow, but if you're happy with this then we promise you a rewarding experience! Tasks would include: •carrying out vital habitat preparation in spring in the build up to the breeding season – this would involve light to medium physical work. •monitoring breeding colonies of seabirds throughout the summer - either on the RSPB's boat, The Good Tern, or on the shore overlooking the breeding colony. •occasionally talking to members of the public about the seabirds and RSPBs protection work •working to ensure the seabird population is safeguarded from external issues like disturbance to the nesting colony. We'd train you in everything you need to know beforehand to include: 1 to 1 training in seabird habitat management & monitoring; an introduction to boat use as well as the use of appropriate safety equipment for the role.

The skills you need

Essential: •An interest in marine/seabird conservation and the enthusiasm to deliver a positive impact. •Self-responsibility in a risk present environment. •Willing to learn new skills. •Happy being with others working in a small team. •Comfortable with the ad-hoc nature of the role Desirable: •Experience of boat use (especially RYA level two training). •Knowledge of seabirds or marine conservation.

Your time

4 days per month between March & July, fewer days over the rest of the year.
March to July primarily
