What we're looking for

The Aire Valley reserves are a mosaic of habitats including open water, reedbed, wet grassland, developing heathland and woodland. This is a fantastic opportunity to work as part of the reserve team, helping to make a difference and learning more about the Aire Valley reserves and how they are managed for wildlife. This role will also provide excellent experience for those wanting to pursue a career within the conservation sector. There will be opportunities to learn new skills, and training will be given where appropriate. The main winter work task will be clearing scrub in a variety of these habitats to enhance them for wildlife. Other habitat management and general maintenance tasks may arise from time to time to ensure that the Aire Valley remains a great place for both wildlife and visitors. • Assist the warden team to deliver the management plan and the targets which are set on an annual basis. • Assist with habitat management work – this includes tasks such as woodland management, scrub removal from the reedbeds, wet grassland and meadows. • Assist in infrastructure maintenance such as footpath work, bench installation and fence repair/installation. • Represent the RSPB in a positive manner whilst out on the reserve. • Work safely as part of a team to complete tasks to a high standard that maintain or improve the visitor experience on site. • Optional: Survey and monitoring work – during breeding season a variety of surveys are conducted. Opportunities to shadow experienced surveyors may be available.

The skills you need

No previous experience is necessary, just an eagerness to get stuck in, an enjoyment of team work and an enthusiasm for working in the natural environment, A basic level of fitness is required, a willingness to work outside in all weathers, to work flexibly and a desire to learn new skills You will need to be able to work well within a team and occasionally independently and have an interest in the work of the RSPB.

Notes

You will need to attend an induction session as well as Unconscious Bias training as a minimum. You will be able to access a comprehensive learning and development programme including access some specific practical skills training to enhance your role as appropriate. You will be allocated a line manager and will have regular opportunities to discuss your role with this person. You will also be given a uniform and have access to the site-specific equipment needed to undertake your role.
