What to expect
Saltholme on Teesside is one of our newer reserves, opening its doors to visitors in 2009. Visitors often express their surprise at the peace and tranquillity the reserve provides despite its industrial and urban setting. It is a wet grassland reserve which is nationally important for wintering wildfowl and waders and since opening has become the largest inland colony of common tern since the creation of a number of cockle shell islands. The reserve is a really important local community resource and is second only to our Rainham Marshes reserve in Greater London in welcoming visits from local primary schools. The award-winning visitor centre is arguably the best of its kind in the UK, with a well-stocked shop selling birdcare products, and a restaurant selling a range of hot and cold food including vegetarian options, all sourced locally wherever possible to reduce transport miles and support the local economy. The Kingfisher Meeting Room offers a high quality facility which can be hired at competitive rates. Combining meetings/training with a team challenge activity delivers a really special event.
