Corporate Team Challenge - RSPB Saltholme

Wednesday 20 July 2016
Vacancy type:
Practical conservation, Corporate and employee volunteering

What to expect

Saltholme on Teesside is one of our newer reserves, opening its doors to visitors in 2009. Visitors often express their surprise at the peace and tranquillity the reserve provides despite its industrial and urban setting. It is a wet grassland reserve which is nationally important for wintering wildfowl and waders and since opening has become the largest inland colony of common tern since the creation of a number of cockle shell islands. The reserve is a really important local community resource and is second only to our Rainham Marshes reserve in Greater London in welcoming visits from local primary schools. The award-winning visitor centre is arguably the best of its kind in the UK, with a well-stocked shop selling birdcare products, and a restaurant selling a range of hot and cold food including vegetarian options, all sourced locally wherever possible to reduce transport miles and support the local economy. The Kingfisher Meeting Room offers a high quality facility which can be hired at competitive rates. Combining meetings/training with a team challenge activity delivers a really special event.

Your group

The main volunteer period described above can support larger volunteer groups of up to 20 individuals. Outside these periods, smaller groups of between 10 and 15 individuals are preferred. We will provide all necessary tools, materials and protective items (PPE). Please bring appropriate clothing for the time of year – sun hats and sun cream plus lots of water to drink if hot and extra layers and waterproofs during the colder months. Please also wear stout boots or shoes. You are covered by our comprehensive public liability insurance and we provide risk assessments and a safety briefing prior to the start of your day. A warden will be with you at all times and there will always be at least one first aider close-at-hand throughout the day.

All year

The skills and time provided by corporate teams are incredibly valuable to the RSPB. Corporate work parties help us tackle jobs that would otherwise take our wardens days or even weeks to complete. Employee volunteering also helps us to build community links and valuable business support, and many of our business volunteers return to our reserves with family and friends after their volunteer experience. Some even join as members and become life-long supporters.

How you will help us

The reserve can offer a wide variety of tasks throughout the year but particularly welcomes support during the period from September through to March when invasive weed and scrub control is necessary to prevent their encroachment on key habitats. Every year around March there is also a major task to refurbish the cockle shell islands in preparation for the return of the common terns from West Africa.
