Farnham Heath & Hazeley Heath Nature Reserves

What we're looking for

RSPB Farnham Heath nature reserve is part of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and home to whole host of wildlife including roe deer, nightjars, woodcocks and tree pipets. We're passionate about inspiring the next generation about the wonders of nature and wildlife, so run a series of reserve events across the year specifically for children and families. We're looking for two volunteers with excellent organisational skills to work together to plan, implement and run each family friendly event. Tasks would include: • Recruiting and train a small team of event volunteers • Plan, organise and run an inspiring programme of events for children and families including family fun days. This would include: 'Activity Thursday' during school half term weeks, supporting at our larger events such as The Big Wild Sleep Out and Christmas Pull a Pine event. You could also explore the option of creating new family friendly events, helping local people to see and enjoy our lovely wildlife. • Create and maintain event resources, eg games. This would include ensuring the reserve nature trail is up to date. • Ensure other reserve volunteers are briefed and kept updated with the programme of family events. • Provide ongoing support & management for event volunteers to include: regular catch ups to discuss day to day work along with their ongoing development; ensuring the team are well versed in health & safety and safeguarding relation to running events. NB. Before starting in role we'd ensure you receive a full induction and training relevant to the role including first aid, events delivery, working with volunteers & how to use our volunteer database. Required training would also include Safeguarding & GDPR. Time commitment: to learn the ropes, explore the reserve, help recruit a small team and get stuck in. After this the role is flexible

The skills you need

Essential: • Excellent leadership skills and a great 'people person' • Top notch organisational and planning skills • Experience of working with children and families • Enthusiasm, commitment and confidence to communicate effectively with all ages (especially children) abilities and backgrounds • A reliable and effective team worker • Basic computer skills to include Microsoft packages • Time commitment: initially one day a week to learn the ropes and recruit a small team of event volunteers. Then after this the role is flexible although it may suit you to come in more regularly leading up to large events. At least one day a week during half terms, Easter, Summer (every Thursday, plus the Big Wild Sleep Out event the last weekend in July), October (Thursday) and Christmas (Pull a Pine, first Sunday in December). • An interest in nature conservation Desirable • Previous experience of planning and running events • A basic knowledge of the RSPB, the reserve birds, wildlife environment and conservation issues (you can learn this while with us, it would be great if you already follow our work).

Your time

One day a week (a weekday or weekend day, or either) particularly during school half terms, though flexibility around this. We are very happy to discuss arrangements
all year round, especially school holidays

We'd ensure you're reimbursed for any out-of-pocket travel expenses whilst you're volunteering for us. , You have ongoing support from the Assistant Warden, Event Team Leader and Reserve Volunteer Co-ordinator. Ongoing support will be provided for this role from a dedicated line manager and other team members at the reserve.
