What we're looking for

We are looking for someone to join our team and help us manage data in its paper, electronic spreadsheet and digitally mapped formats. Most data are held on Merlin, RSPB's bespoke ESRI based mapping and Geographic Information System (GIS). Merlin is home to a vast amount and variety of our conservation Data. You will help digitise data from paper survey forms and maps as well as organise spreadsheets so they can be easily interpreted for analysis in research studies. You will also help us manage our planning, consultation and casework module within Merlin. The main tasks in this entail creating new cases and updating existing cases under the guidance of our casework officer. Good evidence underpins all our conservation work and the basis of this is good data. It is important that we make our data available (in an electronic format) and share it within the RSPB, and externally in a timely manner so that it can be used effectively for nature conservation.

The skills you need

This is an office based position. You will have a strong interest in nature and the environment. Some experience in reading maps, and using Excel and GIS would be advantageous, but further training will be provided. Knowledge of welsh place names and pronunciation is desirable. Knowledge of bird distribution in Wales would likewise be beneficial.

Your time

At least one day per week
All year round

What's in it for you?

The opportunity to develop Excel and GIS skills and to get a thorough understanding of how the RSPB works and the breadth of work being carried out by the organisation. The internal mapping system Merlin is key to many roles within the organisation so you will get to work with a variety of people in different departments. There may also be the opportunity to develop skills on Merlin's parent programme, ArcGiS, which holds some of the more complex databases the conservation team work with.
