What we're looking for

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our regular Friday work party to help maintain the beautiful trail network of Blean Woods, for our many visitors to enjoy. Blean Woods is one of the largest RSPB nature reserves in the south east and needs a lot of maintenance work during the spring and summer months. Tasks will include: - Repairs to fences, gates and styles - Maintenance of visitor amenities such as signs, way markers, benches, etc - Track repairs - Cutting back over hanging vegetation on the trails

The skills you need

A typical day will involve being in the woods from 9am to 3pm with plenty of opportunities for breaks. Therefore you will need a reasonable level of physical fitness, but we have volunteers of all age groups and abilities! Our work parties go out in all weather conditions – hot and cold, wet and dry! Previous experience of using hand tools such as loppers and bow saws is desirable, though not essential. Experience can be gained on the reserve with support from staff and a friendly, welcoming volunteer team. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals with a positive attitude. A strong work ethic is desirable!

Your time

Minimum:
One day (Friday) per week.
Duration:
Ongoing
Period:
April to September

What's in it for you?

The chance to join a dynamic and nature loving team of all ages and abilities to do something positive for nature and improve the experience for people visiting the reserve. It's also a great opportunity to enjoy getting outside - Blean Woods is a beautiful ancient woodland with huge areas of coppice, glades, rides and heathland. Walking around the woods on a weekly basis means you will get to experience nature highlights, from hearing the song of the Nightingale to the sight of the rare and beautiful Heath Fritillary butterfly. You will be able to gain experience and confidence in using various hand tools, whilst keeping fit and healthy in a scenic location!
