Vacancy type:
Practical conservation
Belfast Lough

What we're looking for

Due to the availability of new areas of land to be managed within our Belfast Window on Wildlife Reserve we need more help to restore habitat for the abundance of wildlife in the area. Our conservation work ranges from managing habitat on our reserves to people engagement or campaigning – and much more. The need for our work increases as the pressure on the environment grows, and this is where you come in. Belfast WOW is one of our jewels in the crown of RSPB Northern Ireland, and we are looking for volunteers to assist us in our habitat management and creation on the reserve. The main areas of work on the reserve are creating habitat for breeding waders, removing invasive plants on an annual basis, maintaining the tern islands and maintaining the infrastructure around the public accessible areas. We are looking for a team of volunteers to help us at our busiest time of the year from August onwards following the birds breeding season.

The skills you need

To get the most out of this role you need to be enthusiastic about outdoor work and conservation. Certificates in brush cutter maintenance would be a benefit but training will be given so do not let that put you off. Some heavy lifting is required and travelling on foot over rough/muddy/wet terrain is a regular occurrence. As the work is on a wetland site a tetanus jab is essential.

Your time

One or two days per week, 09.30 – 15.00
August onwards

What's in it for you?

The RSPB is an active and exciting conservation charity, the largest bird conservation charity in Europe. We can give you a valuable insight into our work and you will become part of our growing team of staff and volunteers, getting the chance to use and develop your interests, as well as meeting new people and developing skills. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to gain practical experience within the conservation sector This role is ideal for gaining a wide range of skills required for a career in conservation. As a member of the wider Belfast WOW team you will be expected to be the face of RSPB and engage with the visiting public. There are four volunteer gatherings per year on a quarterly basis. These are for all the volunteers to get together to meet each other with the aim of building a stronger team, and to learn about what is happening and is going to happen around the reserve. We are a member of the Millennium Volunteer Scheme ensuring 14-25 year old commitment is recognised and rewarded.
