Sandwell Valley

What we're looking for

We want the local community to be more involved in shaping activities and events at RSPB Sandwell Valley. We have received funding from Heritage Lottery Fund and with their help we have been able to build a new centre, which signals a new era for the reserve, and we want representatives from the local community to help shape what we do now and in the future. We set up the Community Forum to be an advisory body to discuss issues affecting the reserve and we initially looked for local representatives from a number of groups / themes who can input into the Forum. We have moved on from this set up now the new centre is up and running. We would like the forum to be open to anyone who uses the reserve and is interested in the work the RSPB does in the valley. As a community forum volunteer you will: • Attend a meeting every two months where we plan and discuss events and activities that will encourage more people to visit the reserve and the new visitor centre • Help deliver one annual community activity or project • Help at key events at the reserve such as the summer pyjama party and the Christmas fair by talking to visitors and getting their feedback

The skills you need

We're looking for enthusiastic individuals who enjoy working as part of a team to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes for the local community. You'll need a genuine commitment to helping improve RSPB Sandwell Valley nature reserve and helping to integrate it more into the fabric of the local community. As we are looking for members to contribute ideas for activities and events, you'll need to be comfortable contributing to group discussions. You'll also be expected to be a champion for the reserve in the local community and get involved in the delivery of some events at the reserve or in the local area.

Your time

3 out of the 6 meetings per year, 2 hours per meeting
Throughout the year

What's in it for you?

This is an exciting opportunity to ensure the local community is represented in the development of your local RSPB nature reserve and that we develop the right activities and events for everyone in the local area so that it becomes an important part of the local community. We know how special the reserve is for wildlife and we want everyone who visits to have an opportunity to get closer to nature, and you can help us achieve that by being a voice for the local community. You will get an insight into the work of the RSPB, Europe's largest conservation organisation and see how the nature reserve is run and managed for both wildlife and people. On a rotational basis, Forum members will have the opportunity to be the Forum Chairperson for a maximum term of two years, if they wish.
