Vacancy type:
Inspiring young people, Community groups
Location:
Sandwell Valley

What we're looking for

Sandwell Valley nature reserve is on the doorstep of a vibrant and diverse community, and we are looking for a community champion to help us shout about getting outdoors and the amazing wildlife in the valley. You will assist the community engagement team with outreach visits across the borough as well as activities for local people on the reserve itself. We will meet a wide range of people, from youth clubs to history societies to community centres, and hopefully discover how we can bring them closer to nature. You might be helping with a practical activity, such as bird box making or just by having an informal chat. We need you to help us plan for the visits, pack up the resources to take with us, and be a friendly face when we get there. As someone who cares about nature, you will be helping us greatly, just by being there and chatting about how Sandwell Valley is a great home for wildlife. With your help more people from the local community will want to come back to Sandwell Valley time and time again.

The skills you need

We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, with a ready smile. You'll enjoy striking up conversations with people and passing on your passion for nature and the outdoors (don't worry, you don't have to be an expert). You'll have a real desire and interest to invest in communities and see them benefit from having a deeper connection with their local nature reserve. We don't expect you to be working on your own; you'll be with staff or volunteers and we will travel to outreach events together. Some of the community outreach work might include visits to youth clubs, so experience working with children is important.

Your time

Minimum:
1-2 days a month
Duration:
4 years
Period:
Throughout the year

What's in it for you?

The RSPB is an active and exciting conservation charity, the largest in Europe! This is an opportunity to work in a small friendly team. You will gain useful experience of working for an environmental charity and the warm happy feeling that comes with helping save our amazing wildlife. This is a great chance to learn specifically about the importance of people in wildlife conservation; a chance to look at the bigger picture and see how whole communities can help save nature.
