What we're looking for

Giving Nature a Home in Cardiff (GNAH Cardiff) is an exciting new pilot project, delivered in partnership with the City of Cardiff Council that aims to inspire young people and their families to get outside and enjoy wildlife in their gardens, school grounds, parks and the green-spaces of Cardiff. As an Event Supporter, you'll play an essential role in this project; delivering nature-based activities with families in parks, green spaces and event venues across Cardiff. You'll be confident working with small numbers of volunteers, engaging with as many children as possible in order to help reach our project targets. The project has a programme of events to attend where we'll be delivering a variety of activities - some using our engagement bike. Events will range from community run table-top events in parks and green spaces to pop-up engagement in shopping centres. We're looking for someone who will bring creativity and fresh ideas to these events and attend occasional workshops with project staff to help develop ideas.

The skills you need

You'll have a basic knowledge of wildlife and be enthusiastic about sharing this knowledge using language and delivering activities appropriate for families and children under 12 years. You'll be confident in approaching and speaking with the public. You'll support a team of volunteers with set-up and break-down of equipment at events, including marquees and table displays. You'll listen to feedback and be proactive and creative in identifying ways our events and activities could be improved. In doing so, you'll keep in close contact with the project team and attend occasional meetings at the Cardiff office. You'll enjoy spending time outdoors and ideally be able to make your way around Cardiff fairly independently with the use of public transport, but we'll work with you to ensure this is possible.

Your time

Minimum:
At least one event a month
Duration:
Until March 2022
Period:
All year round

What's in it for you?

Join our growing team of GNAH Cardiff volunteers, they're a great bunch, and are all enthusiastic about exploring and protecting the natural world. Your interaction with children and families across Cardiff will play an important part in helping to spark an interest and curiosity that could last a lifetime. As a result, you'll be helping Cardiff become a more nature-friendly city. You'll work closely with other Event Supporter and Event Supervisor volunteers who will lead activities. You'll have the chance to develop skills through the project such as people skills and confidence speaking to the public, ID skills and species knowledge. You'll spend time outdoors enjoying Cardiff's parks and green spaces and pick up identification skills and species knowledge through the activities you lead. You'll also develop your communication skills engaging with the public. It's a varied role and flexible around what you want to do. There will be opportunities for progression into the Events Supervisor volunteer role if you demonstrate ability and ambition to lead a small team of volunteers and deliver activities at events. Please note you will not be asked to run sessions independently, but as part of a team.
