What we're looking for

Rainham Marshes is a fantastic wet grassland nature reserve right on the banks of the River Thames and only 30 minutes from central London. We're looking for a dedicated volunteer intern to work alongside the Warden Team on habitat management, reserve maintenance and survey work. Must be willing to undertake strenuous manual labour outside in all weathers. These tasks are vital to the conservation of the special site and the smooth running of visitor operations. Tasks would include: •Habitat management including Lowland wet grassland and Reedbed •Anti predator work, including electric fence upkeep and monitoring •Infrastructure maintenance ie boardwalk replacement •Equipment and machine servicing •Visitor engagement and assisting with events. •Assisting with ecological monitoring and surveying A comprehensive induction and all necessary training will be provided.

The skills you need

Essential: •Can commit three days a week for six months •Strong work ethic •Ability to work independently and proactively •Ability to get stuck in to a range of practical tasks, some of which require full days outdoors in all weather, and can involve lifting equipment plus carrying goods and long spells walking. •Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn new skills. Organised with attention to detail. •Confident meeting new people and representing the charity. •Commitment to the work of the RSPB. Desirable •Some DIY, basic outdoor skills or knowledge of machinery would be advantageous, although full training will be given. RSPB runs an inclusive volunteer internship scheme, so whether you have just graduated, finished your A Levels and looking for voluntary experience in your gap year or you are looking for a change of career paths we welcome your application. However, we do ask that you meet the following requirements: You must:• •be 18 years old or over •be available for six months •have achieved A-levels or equivalent •be computer literate

Your time

Minimum:
3 days a week
Duration:
6 months
Period:
late Jan 2020 to late Aug 2020

What's in it for you?

This is a great chance to learn new skills and gain experience with a view to furthering a career in conservation. An opportunity to work as part of a lively and fun reserve team whilst learning more about the reserve, its birds, invertebrates and flora. You'd be making a genuine contribution to wildlife conservation and play a real part in helping shape the RSPB's vision for the reserve: to maximise the biodiversity and heritage potential of the marshes and to create a flagship visitor reserve. You'll also get: •access to our internal vacancies during your internship •a reference on successful completion of your internship •a dedicated mentor will monitor your progress and help with personal development throughout the internship. Doing a volunteer internship will not guarantee you a job with the RSPB. Our volunteer internships are designed to offer work experience. However, volunteer interns can apply to our paid vacancies, including those only advertised internally. For obvious reasons a volunteer intern would need to have proven themselves in their current role, before expecting their volunteering experience to assist in an application to a paid post.
