What we're looking for

If you're a 'people person', like to keep busy and enjoy feeling part of a team then this role could be right up your street! Join our friendly team as a volunteer in our visitor centre cafe at RSPB Pulborough Brooks nature reserve. People flock from far and wide to enjoy a whole host of delicious delights in our cafe, from hot and cold breakfast's and lunches to cream teas and luscious slices of cake with coffee! All of which helps to raise vital funds to support the RSPBs conservation work. Importantly you don't need to have previous experience of working in a cafe/kitchen environment, a friendly & helpful manner along with a keen desire to keep things running smoothly are much more important for this role – we can train you in everything else you need to know before you start. However if you do have cafe experience including till work then this would be very helpful. Main tasks would include: •Serving customers in the cafe (which would involve using a till – we'd train you in how to use the till beforehand) •Assisting with food preparation •Loading and unloading the dishwasher in the kitchen area •Keeping the kitchen area clean and tidy •Keeping the cafe area clean & tidy. •Working as a team to overall ensure the smooth running of the cafe. NB. We'd provide you with a full induction before starting in the role which would include: health and safety; using the till; an overview of the conservation work that's going on at the reserve & the wildlife that benefits; an overview of the work of the wider RSPB. You'd also receive training in food hygiene and basic catering (if you haven't already got a basic food hygiene certificate) We'd also ensure you're issued with an RSPB uniform and name badge and provide ongoing support for as long as you're volunteering with us.

The skills you need

It's key that you enjoy working with people and are happiest working part of a team. You'd need to appreciate the importance of giving customers a great experience too of course. Reliability is also key along with being presentable! Not essential - so a good if you've got it though it doesn't matter if you haven't as we can train you – is a basic food hygiene certificate.

Your time

Minimum:
Week days or Saturdays or Sundays
Duration:
Ongoing
Period:
All year round

What's in it for you?

A marvellous opportunity to meet new people, staff and fellow volunteers alike and be part of a friendly team. Learn all about food hygiene and catering. A great way of boosting your CV if you're looking to pursue a career in catering. Enjoy volunteering in a wonderful setting on a beautiful RSPB nature reserve and learn more about the vital conservation work that's carried out there. If you're a keen birdwatcher it's also a great opportunity to get in a bit of birdwatching before or after your shift in the cafe!
