What we're looking for

Turtle dove numbers have declined by 94% in the UK since 1995 and are vulnerable to global extinction (IUCN Red List of Endangered Species). We need your help to save this iconic farmland species. We are looking for an enthusiastic people person to help co-ordinate volunteers and turtle dove surveys in Essex and Suffolk. We need someone to manage the full survey process from start to finish including recruiting and training a team of highly motivated volunteers, co-ordinate surveys and map completed surveys on the in-house GIS system.

The skills you need

Strong organisational and communication skills and attention to detail are all essential for the role along with an outgoing personality and a passion for wildlife. A knowledge of farmland birds, map reading and GIS or data analysis skills will be beneficial but full training and support will be provided in all aspects of the role. Experience in people management, recruitment, training and event organising would also be useful but is not essential.

1 day per week
Duration:
Ongoing
Period:

What's in it for you?

This is an exciting opportunity to learn more about survey methodology, farmland species and wildlife friendly farming practices whilst also having the opportunity to work with like minded people and the chance to gain a valuable insight into the workings of Europe's largest conservation charity. The role will provide experience in working with and co-ordinating volunteers. You will also receive training on the in-house GIS system to analyse and map the data collected from the surveys.

This role is predominately home based but visits to the RSPB offices in Norwich, Essex and Suffolk locations will be required from time to time. Appropriate training will be provided and expenses will be re-imbursed where necessary. You will need to be able to work the occasional weekend when required to recruit volunteers and carry out training and thank you events. The RSPB is the UK charity working to secure a healthy environment for birds and wildlife, helping to create a better world for all of us. We belong to BirdLife International, the global partnership of bird conservation organisations. Your time and skills could make a real difference to the work of the RSPB and it would be great if you could join us.
