What we're looking for

Newton marsh SSSI, near Freckleton, is a fantastic wetland marsh providing a home for large numbers of wintering wildfowl and wading birds. It is also a very productive site for breeding birds in the spring and summer, supporting a large density of lapwing, redshank and skylark nests. We need volunteer reserve assistants to keep an eye on the site and its anti-predator fence, which keeps all the ground-nesting birds safe as they nest and rear young. You will be our eyes and ears on the ground, checking the integrity of the fence and working as part of the reserve team to make repairs and improvements. You will also help with monitoring the breeding bird populations by completing surveys and helping with nest protection.

The skills you need

An interest in wildlife and nature conservation. Basic bird identification skills desirable. A reasonable level of fitness and a willingness to get stuck into practical tasks is required. An up-to-date tetanus vaccination is required.

Your time

Minimum:
1 - 2 days per month
Duration:
Ongoing
Period:
All year round

What's in it for you?

You will be helping to save native British wildlife that has undergone huge declines in the past 50 years. Lapwing were once a common site in the wider countryside, but surveys have shown their numbers have declined as much as 80%. You will get training and learn about the workings of this special nature reserve. Volunteering in a natural green space can also contribute to people's wellbeing by improving physical and mental health.
