Vacancy type:
Practical conservation
Location:
Great Bells Farm

What we're looking for

Our reserves at Great Bells Farm, Harty Marshes, and Capel Fleet Raptor View Point on the Isle of Sheppey provide vital habitat for a wide variety of birds and wildlife. In order to manage these reserves we need volunteers who enjoy getting stuck in with practical conservation and maintenance work to join our work party. You will be working with other volunteers on a variety of tasks ranging from vegetation clearance, fencing, ditch clearance and occasionally helping to carry out wildlife surveys on the reserves.

The skills you need

Enthusiasm and an interest in conservation are essential. No specialist skills are required though a good level of fitness and a desire to work outside is essential. You will need an up-to-date tetanus injection and to enjoy working as part of a team.

Your time

Minimum:
1 day a week
Duration:
Ongoing
Period:
All year round

What's in it for you?

Joining the work party will provide a great opportunity to enjoy the reserve and get close to nature, while making a real difference to the work of the RSPB by helping to maintain the reserves and its wildlife habitat. You will have the chance to work as part of a small friendly team, get fit and gain knowledge of practical nature conservation. You will gain a valuable insight into the workings of Europe's largest conservation charity.

Notes

The work party currently meets on a Tuesday (come rain or shine!) but we are also looking at the possibility of setting up a second working party if we can get enough volunteers. This second work party could take place on Mondays or Fridays. All the training necessary and background information will be provided and since you'll be giving up your time, it's only fair that we offer to re-imburse your travel expenses (up to 25 miles). You will be invited to "volunteer thank you" events and will of course be given ongoing support in your role. The RSPB speaks our for birds and wildlife, tackling the problems that threaten our environment. We rely upon memberships and donations to fund our work. By volunteering your time you can make a real difference to the work of the RSPB. Nature is amazing - help us keep it this way.
