What we're looking for

We are looking for someone to be the welcoming face of the RSPB, greeting people at the entrance to our reserves, helping to deliver our Great Welcome. You will engage with the public, ensuring they have the best possible interaction with our conservation work and our reserves. The Aire Valley is an amazing place, our ex industrial sites are rich in heritage and are now a fabulous habitat for nature. As the first point of contact for visitors and families you will be providing them with the information that they need to get around the site, letting them know what nature they can see and activities they can participate in. Through conversations you will actively encourage support for the RSPB including through membership.

The skills you need

You will have a pro-active approach to customer service. An approachable and friendly manner, open demeanour and ability to positively interact with people of all ages and backgrounds good people skills and an outgoing personality. Able to assist people to get the most from their visit including direct them with the use of site maps. Have confidence and be happy to welcome and initiate positive conversations with visitors about key areas, such as the work of the RSPB and how they can support us. Comfortable in asking for support for the RSPB. A natural interest and enthusiasm about wildlife, inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to save wildlife. Wildlife knowledge is not essential, but enthusiasm is. To be reliable and make a commitment to the role. Be happy to work outside and willing to pitch in and help colleagues, including helping in the Visitor Centre if needed. Basic computer skills are needed to sign into computer and tablet and complete the online forms.

You will need to attend an Induction session, GREAT Welcome, Membership and Safeguarding training sessions as well as some online training in data protection and credit card usage. You will also be able to access a comprehensive development programme run for our volunteers. We provide training, structured 121 development and induction into the RSPB if wanted and references and skills that will assist you in future endeavours. You will be given a uniform, provided with the resources you need to undertake your role and fully insured while on duty. Travel expenses will be paid within RSPB policy.
