Wednesday 22 May 2019
Vacancy type:
Office and administration, Publicity and promotional, Volunteering at home
Exe Estuary Reserve

What we're looking for

We want to make sure that all of our news about forthcoming events reach the widest, targeted, audience possible, not to mention promoting the reserve to attract new visitors and potentially new members for the RSPB. We need someone to help make this possible! Along with doing this, through attraction websites and printed media event listings and offer pages, we need someone to work their way through our existing lists, and help ensure that our information on events is up to date, with the aim to also expand this list by finding new places to advertise the reserve (for free of course!). We then need to analyse the return on our work to ensure that we are using the best media outlets possible. You will work as a key link between the reserve and the work of our Public Affairs team in delivering objectives for conservation, education, volunteering, youth work, people-engagement, awareness raising, events, media work and much more. Day-to-day work may include: • creating posters, adverts and event posts • putting up posters in the local areas, • communicating with the public affairs team to ensure we are staying on brand • delivering to time scales and communicating with the reserves team if we are behind on certain advertising targets. There is also the need for some writing for local newsletters and parish magazines on a monthly basis to improve communications with the local area.

The skills you need

We're looking for someone who is outgoing, enthusiastic and confident with good communication skills. The ideal candidate will be computer literate, happy to surf the web and tackle data entry on a range of websites. Picking up the phone to talk to advertising and promotion people at newspapers, magazines and other media outlets will be a large part of the role, so a confident telephone manner is needed. It would also be good for you to be able to analyse the success of our promotion work with simple spreadsheets and graphs.

Your time

One day a week (flexible, can be more or less)
All year round

What's in it for you?

This role is a fantastic opportunity for you to develop a whole host of new, exciting skills. With the role covering so much variety, you'll be able to develop/build on your communication skills, media skills, advertising design, creative writing, local knowledge and more. In addition, you'll have the opportunity to meet and work with like-minded people, both at our reserve and beyond, and develop strong relationships. You'll be making a huge difference to RSPB work in the local area and be the key to building RSPB presence, work and create a stronger bond with local people. This role is very flexible, with the opportunity to commit however much time you'd like. You can choose whether you wish to be office or home based (or a combination of both) and there is scope to split the role and share it between more than one person.
