Work Party Leader

Thursday 6 September 2018
Vacancy type:
Office and administration, Practical conservation
Location:
Exe Estuary Reserve

What we're looking for

Our work parties are a fantastic example of volunteer team work, passion and diversity. Everyone has a part to play and everyone loves being a part of it. We need someone to lead the team and deliver fantastic practical conservation! We need you to facilitate the smooth running of our work party programme and to ensure all work is done in a timely and safe manor. This involves leading the team of work party volunteers onto the reserve and taking responsibility for improving the site, after guidance and instructions from the site manager and assistant warden. This support will be offered to you with weekly conversations with the site manager and/or assistant warden to receive the weeks 'jobs'. It is then your responsibility to lead and plan the work party day to ensure the work is done effectively and in a safe environmentally friendly way. You will need to follow RSPB procedures for escalating issues and problems back to the site manager and assistant warden. In addition, you'll need to record – on paper maps – the work completed, so that it can be uploaded to our recording system and report back to the reserve team after each work party to inform them of progress and outstanding work.

The skills you need

You will need: • excellent communication and leadership skills • the ability to plan and organise yourself and others • a solid understanding of risk assessments and health and safety procedures • Experience in practical conservation work (planting, fencing, gate repair, general handy work and DIY) It would be desirable to have quad bike and pesticide or chainsaw tickets, but not essential. You would need to have a driving license and have access to a vehicle.

Your time

Minimum:
Every Thursday
Duration:
Ongoing
Period:
Summer/Autumn/Winter

What's in it for you?

This is a fantastic opportunity for you to develop your, or learn new, leadership skills, prioritising, working as part of a team and planning and reporting skills! You'll be a part of the brilliant practical conservation work we do in the local area, and have major impact with its deliver and results, whilst inspiring and supporting the volunteers who do it. You'll be meeting and working with like-minded, enthusiastic people who enjoy getting their hands dirty, and have the chance to get exclusive access to our Exminster Marshes reserve.
