GIS & Mapping Volunteer

Thursday 6 September 2018
Vacancy type:
Office and administration, Practical conservation, Surveying wildlife
Aylesbeare Common

What we're looking for

Merlin is the RSPB's Geographic Information System (GIS) and mapping system and holds our species and sites data. It contains millions of species, site, habitat, casework and species protection records, as well as providing a means to access a huge range of external datasets. We need someone to keep this in top condition to help support our projects/reserves! We need help to make sure that our datasets are up to date. This position will primarily involve inputting data into Merlin and there are a number of projects that we need help with. For example, work might involve corn bunting species data, reserve habitat data, and will change depending on the availability of work at the time. We use Merlin to keep track of our progress against our targets and requires weekly updating of what work has been done on the reserves. This allows us to report annually on the success of the year and allows us to maintain and meet our targets.

The skills you need

You will need to be computer literate and a confident user of Excel, and have a real eye for detail. Experience of using GIS mapping software is desired but not essential, as training will be provided. You will be able to work on your own initiative unsupervised, and also work as part of a team.

Your time

1 day per week
All year round

What's in it for you?

This is a brilliant opportunity to develop GIS skills in a work environment and building competence. You will be making a valuable contribution to nature conservation and experience working for RSPB. Once set up and confident, there is the opportunity to perform this role from home if you wish, with the only office specific work being to pop in to pick up the data. Otherwise, you are more than welcome to perform this role from our office.
