Visitor Experience Volunteer - 6 Month Placement

What we're looking for

Are you looking for an opportunity to gain experience in a visitor role in the conservation sector? Do you have great customer service? Do you love working with people? Do you fancy spending six or twelve months volunteering in a beautiful place, with fantastic people, seeing things in the natural world that you'd never normally see? We have an exciting opportunity for a long term Visitor Experience Volunteer working with our RSPB Exe Estuary team focusing on our Bowling Green Marsh reserve in Topsham, Devon! Bowling Green Marsh is situated on the River Exe, close to the town of Topsham. Visitors to the Marsh can watch birds up close, including spring and autumn migrating birds, and winter flocks of waders, ducks and geese feeding and resting, from the comfort of the Lookout hide. We have a newly created family room with a view, 'The Lookout', at Bowling Green Marsh, complete with comfy sofas, tea and coffee and the most amazing view of the marsh and are looking for someone to help us build our visitor offer to the next level. We want to ensure that every visitor to the reserve has a brilliant time and is inspired to come back again and to be inspired to take action for nature. This is where you come in! You will help us build our volunteer team, help run events, sell tea and coffee and deliver great customer service as well as help develop links with the local community to use this space. We want you to inspire people about the work of the RSPB and ask them whether they'd like to become a member (if they aren't already). We will train you in everything you need to know beforehand and you don't need to be a bird expert. Just have a passion for nature and wildlife.

The skills you need

If you're a 'people person', friendly, approachable and have good understanding of the importance of giving visitors a first class experience then this could be the role for you! You need to be confident initiating conversations with people and tailoring your conversation to suit. We will train you in everything you need to know beforehand and you DON'T need to be a bird expert. Just have a passion for nature and wildlife. Closing date for applications: Friday 9 November 2018. Interviews: To be held week of 19 November 2018

Minimum:
2.5 days a week (including minimum of 2x weekend days per month)

Period:
Nov/Dec 2018 - May 2019 (flexibilty for full year)

What's in it for you?

A great opportunity to really make a difference to our work in an amazing setting! Meet lots of new people: reserve visitors, staff and fellow volunteers. Learn more about the Devon reserves and the wildlife that uses them. You will be a key part of our busy, professional team and will get the opportunity to work in different aspects of our visitor operation, including our people engagement and links with our RSPB shop at Dart's Farm. We will agree a training package for the post holder that will be a combination of on the job training and relevant specialist training courses. You will gain experience of working in the RSPB as the country's largest nature conservation body, inspiring everyone to give nature a home. Volunteering can help you gain skills and give you a valuable insight into our work.
