What we're looking for

The Exeter & District local group plays a vital role supporting the RSPB locally through a mixture of inspiring talks, guided walks and trips, and other events. This volunteer-led group has been running for over 40 years, providing a focal point to meet friendly and like-minded people, while learning more about birds and wildlife. We need your help to do this! In order to keep group members informed about our activities, we produce a quarterly newsletter. We are looking for a new editor to design and edit the newsletter, collecting news and information for inclusion in each issue. The content includes: > news from the local group and the RSPB > details about upcoming events > reports from recent events Your main job is to check the contributions that you receive from group members and use them to construct each issue of the newsletter, adding a small amount of editorial content. You will send the completed newsletter in PDF format for printing and distribution. In addition you will collate information for the annual group programme, and arrange for it to be printed, along with membership renewal (and other) forms. NOTE: The current newsletter editor also edits our website, and many items are published in both places. The website is hosted by the RSPB, and follows a prescribed format. Content is posted using a straightforward web-based interface. Items may be posted as a news item, event or trip report; they may be illustrated by photos from the RSPB images database, or contributed by members. Please let us know if you are interested in editing the website as well as the newsletter. You are also very welcome to get involved with other aspects of the group. In future, we will seek to improve the ways in which we use the newsletter, website, social media and other channels to communicate to our group members and the wider public. We will value your input to improving the way we publish information – new ideas are always very welcome.

The skills you need

As an editor, you will need to have good English language and written communication skills. You will need to be computer literate and familiar with Microsoft Word, or a similar word processing programme. You don't need any bird or wildlife knowledge for this role. In fact, if you want to learn more, then joining us is the best way!

Your time

Minimum:
5 hours per month
Duration:
Ongoing
Period:
All year round

What's in it for you?

As newsletter editor, you will play a key role in communicating with the Exeter & District local group members. You will be a much-valued member of the small friendly committee that runs the local group, which generally meets every two months. As part of the group, you will be amongst like-minded friends with a common interest in learning more about our fantastic wildlife and supporting the RSPB. You will have the opportunity to take part in the wide range of activities we offer. Those activities include indoor meetings with talks, outdoor walks and trips, and other social and fund-raising events, organised by other members of the committee.
