What we're looking for

We're looking for volunteers who are passionate about engaging children with nature and keen to learn new or utilise existing skills. You'll be part of an exciting project helping thousands of children discover and learn more about wildlife in Belfast, giving teachers and their pupils all the support they need to explore the natural world around them. As a Schools Outreach Volunteer, you'll be part of a team responsible for delivering practical outreach sessions in primary schools and nurseries across the city, helping children to discover and learn about the nature in their school grounds. You'll be an essential part of the Schools Outreach Project in Belfast: the project aims to inspire teachers and encourage children and their families to spend more time enjoying and learning about nature.

The skills you need

You'll need to be enthusiastic about working with children and with a keen interest in wildlife. You'll be happy spending lots of time outside in all weathers. You'll be comfortable working with primary and nursery aged children, have excellent communication skills and an ability to connect with and engage both children and their teachers. You'll be part of a busy team, so you'll be a great team player with a positive, can do attitude, resourceful, flexible and keen to learn. With lots of school sessions to deliver you'll be organised and motivated with lots of initiative to ensure you're able to seize all possible opportunities to excel in your role.

Your time

Minimum:
One or two days a fortnight (though we can be flexible on this)
Duration:
Ongoing
Period:
During school term time, and school hours.

What's in it for you?

If you're wanting to gain experience, learn new skills and have fun saving nature through community engagement, this is the role for you. This is a chance to volunteer with Europe's largest conservation charity. Following a period of training and shadowing, you'll be working with children from 3 to 10 years old and, in so doing, be helping to save nature by inspiring and enabling children and their teachers to spend more time outdoors discovering and enjoying the natural world. You'll be able to increase your knowledge of Belfast's urban wildlife and enjoy working alongside RSPB staff and other like-minded volunteers.
