What we're looking for

We have created a new volunteer role to help us manage the fishing ponds at Consall Woods. We are looking for a bailiff to ensure that Heron Pool and Lawn Pool at Consall Woods nature reserve are of a suitable environmental standard to be used for recreation, including fishing for sport. You will: • keep an eye on the health of the stock, • issue day tickets to anglers and take payments, • monitor water quality, • check fishing permits, • enforce the policy that protects water environments and wildlife, • you may also be asked to carry out maintenance of the fishing pegs and clear vegetation in and around the pools.

The skills you need

• An interest in fish and other water wildlife. Some knowledge of freshwater biology is an advantage. • Communication skills to deal with people such as landowners, farmers and customers who are fishing. • To be firm but polite when enforcing laws to protect the environment and prevent illegal fishing; you might have to deal with poachers. • Physical fitness and willingness to work outside in all types of weather. • An interest in conservation issues would be useful but not essential. • You must be able to work as part of the team and potentially on your own initiative.
