Our work with nature in Europe

The RSPB is the UK partner of Birdlife International, the global partnership of bird conservation organisations.

The RSPB and Birdlife International

We are the largest partner, with roughly one third of the global employees and 40 per cent of membership. Consequently, we have a significant role to play in conserving wildlife on a global scale.

EU environmental regulation also plays a huge role in the UK and so we campaign for better environmental policy internationally in order to protect our species domestically. Birds operate across national borders and so should we.

Our major policy areas in the EU are the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and European Budget. We believe further reform of the CAP is necessary to cut wasteful spending and to focus agricultural policy on meeting the environmental and social needs of rural areas, within the context of a more integrated rural policy.

CAP reform can increase the capability of policies designed to improve the management of the rural environment. It will also enable resources to be shifted from direct farm subsidies to supporting the provision of important public goods.

In the EU, untargeted payments made solely to support agricultural price and income outnumber rural development programmes by 3 to 1.
