RSPB response to Prime Minister statement on biodiversity targets

Friday 23 August 2019

RSPB Deputy Director for Ruth Davis said: "It’s totally right the Prime Minister has expressed his deep concern about the crisis in the Amazon – this is a catastrophe for Brazil and for the world, and requires a joined up, emergency response to support all those working to protect the forest.

"We are also delighted to hear the PM commit to new targets to restore nature – these must be at the heart of environment laws across the UK, to ensure we can rehabiliate  habitats, restore our seas and reverse decades of species declines.

“In addition to this, we now need a firm promise that a no-deal Brexit and a rush to new trade deals won’t make a sacrifice of the natural environment – including any proposed trade deal with Brazil and other nations where the natural world is seen as an inconvenience or something to be exploited rather than an asset in need of protection.”
