Discover nature when you need it most

Here’s the latest Covid-19 information for visiting RSPB nature reserves safely.

It’s lovely to hear how much nature helps lift your spirits during this challenging time and we know that for many of you, RSPB reserves are a big part of providing enjoyment and solace in the natural world.

Before visiting us, please read through the following information about which reserves and facilities are open, lockdown restrictions, and changes that may be in place to help keep you and our teams safe.

What’s open?

In line with guidance from the governments of the UK, many of our car parks, trails and toilets remain open for you to visit. In countries which are not subject to national lockdown restrictions, hides, visitor centres, shops and cafés may also be open where possible. Please scroll down to the map or check the relevant reserve page to see which facilities are open.

We urge you to follow guidance from the relevant country administration on non-essential travel and please stay local to your nearest reserves and greenspaces where advised.

Due to the current restrictions, indoor visitor-facing operations in Northern Ireland are currently closed. However, nature is vital to our health and wellbeing, so we are opening visitor trails and car parks where possible.

In Wales, we have re-opened some of our visitor facilities in line with the new national measures announced by the Welsh Government. Please see below for specific information.

In England, we are following government guidance on essential daily exercise outdoors. So, during lockdown from 5 November, many of our car parks, trails and toilets will remain open for you to visit.

Our visitor centres, hides, shops and cafés will be closed for the duration of this lockdown. We are also not running events. On some reserves we have take-away refreshments available.

In Scotland, reserve paths are accessible in line with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, and we're working hard to open our facilities to welcome you back safely. You should also follow the latest Scottish Government advice on non-essential travel, physical distancing and hygiene.

Access to island reserves may be restricted in line with ferry capacities, government advice and local restrictions. Please check with the relevant ferry company before you travel and follow guidance on non-essential travel.

Covid-19 guidance is regularly changing and can differ between UK countries and between areas within the same country. Please check for country restrictions or closures using this link.

Check your local restrictions

The map below shows which RSPB reserves and facilities are open or closed at the moment.

You don’t currently need to pre-book your visit, but please be aware that some of our sites have limited car parking, so can quickly become full. Be mindful of this before you set off and do consider visiting at a less busy time or having an alternative destination for your exercise if needed when you get there.

Keeping everyone safe

We want to let you know how we are responding to the changing Covid-19 situation. Our priority is to keep you and our teams safe. When you visit, you’ll notice we’ve made some changes.

When it comes to which facilities are open on reserves, each site has been considered on an individual basis. We have looked at what it is possible to keep open across the UK within country-specific government guidance, the layout of facilities, and the staffing we have available to manage the site safely.

We also take precautions to protect our special wildlife.

What you need to know

Please observe all current country specific guidance on non-essential travel, group sizes, social/physical distancing and hygiene when visiting RSPB reserves. Be aware the guidance may be different in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and between areas. Please do not visit if you are experiencing symptoms of Covid-19.

Hand sanitiser chevron-down

Hand sanitiser is available on some reserves, but we advise you to bring your own too.

Face coverings chevron-down

We ask that all visitors, except those who are exempt from doing so, please wear a face-covering while in RSPB visitor centres, shops, hides, toilets and when not seated in our cafes.

Thank you for your co-operation to help keep everyone safe.

In line with government regulations, our teams will be wearing face coverings indoors too.

Please be aware that government guidance on face coverings may be different in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Social/physical distancing chevron-down

On several sites, we have introduced one-way systems or created more passing places along our trails where necessary to allow for social/physical distancing. Please follow the signage in place. Be aware the guidance on distancing may be different in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Test and Trace chevron-down

For reserves in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland where we charge for entry, and those reserves where we sell refreshments on-site, you will be asked to check-in to your national Test and Trace app. In situations where it is not possible to use the app, our welcome teams will ask you to provide some basic written details instead.

This is to enable national NHS Test and Trace systems to get in touch should they need to. It also now means that if you feel unable or unwilling to check-in with the app or provide written details, we may, unfortunately, have to refuse entry or service as a result.

We are following strict data protection guidelines so your personal details will be held securely and confidentially by us in accordance with the country data protection requirements.

We will only release the data to the NHS if absolutely necessary, will not use it for any other purpose and will securely destroy it after 21 days as required.

Thank you for following this legal requirement and helping to keep everyone safe.

For further government information, see EnglandScotlandWalesNorthern Ireland.

Toilets chevron-down

Toilets are open on many reserves and we have implemented enhanced cleaning regimes in line with government guidance. Where it isn’t possible to have our toilets open, this may be due to country-specific or local lockdown restrictions, the layout of our facilities, or the staffing we have available to manage them safely. Please see the map below for facilities available at individual reserves.

Hides chevron-down

Many of our hides are open. Where it isn’t possible for a hide to be open, this can be due to country-specific or local lockdown restrictions that may be in place, the size of the hide or the routes to it not allowing for social distancing, or limited staffing available to manage them safely.

When using our hides, so that you can safely enjoy your experience, we ask that all visitors, except those who are exempt from doing so, please wear a face-covering when inside. We may have had to fix hide windows open or closed to reduce the number of touchpoints.

You'll spot that we've got maximum numbers signposted at the entrance to the hides too; please adhere to these and consider the amount of time you dwell in hides on busy days, to allow everyone the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful wildlife in safety.

Please use hand sanitiser where provided, observe social/physical distancing, and follow all signage in the hide. See the map below for facilities available at individual reserves.

Refreshments  chevron-down

On some reserves, we’re offering a selection of refreshment options such as hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, soup, snacks and ice creams to purchase.

Some of our cafes are also open with a reduced menu and table service or takeaways. Card payments are preferred.

Please see the map below for facilities available at individual reserves.

For countries subject to national lockdown restrictions, we are still able to offer takeaway refreshments on some reserves.

Picnics and BBQs chevron-down

You’re welcome to bring a picnic along with you. Please follow government guidelines on essential travel, and follow social distancing when using our picnic benches and other seating. Please take litter home with you.

BBQs are a fire risk, endangering others and wildlife. They are not permitted on our reserves in England, Wales or Northern Ireland at any time.

In Scotland, we ask that you refer to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and the relevant National Park Authority guidelines when considering lighting a fire or a stove on a reserve.

Never light an open fire during prolonged dry periods or in areas such as forests, woods, farmland or on peaty ground and follow all advice at times of high risk.

Opening times chevron-down

Some reserves are operating reduced opening times or days to normal, in order to maintain safe numbers or due to reduced staffing at the moment.

Please see the map below for the opening times of individual reserves or visit the individual reserve website.

Local Lockdowns chevron-down

Access to sites or facilities located within areas subject to additional country or local area lockdown arrangements may be restricted or closed to comply with specific rules or guidance. Rules may be different in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and between areas.

Under country or local lockdown rules, group sizes, social/physical distancing and other requirements may differ from site to site, even within the same country. Please check individual site information for additional restrictions that apply before planning a visit.
