The RSPB's greener gift guide

More and more people are waking up to the impact our consumer-driven lifestyle is having upon precious natural resources and our amazing wildlife. But Christmas shopping needn’t come with a dose of eco-anxiety – these nature friendly gift ideas will help you tread lightly and directly help the wildlife you love. Read below for our top six tips for a greener holiday season.

1

Glitter free and FSC

Glitter is a microplastic that can end up in oceans and ingested by fish. It also means the product can’t be recycled. RSPB Christmas cards are not only gorgeously designed but are also printed on wildlife friendly, fully recyclable FSC cardboard.

2

Cut down on plastic

One easy change you can make today is start using a reusable metal bottle rather than a single-use plastic container. These triple-layered bottles will keep your drinks warm or cold for longer and come in five exclusive motifs – a barn owl, puffin, blue tit, hare and hedgehog. We also offer the world’s first reusable cup made from recycled coffee cups. It can be recycled once again at the end of its life cycle (ten years of use) and is completely leak proof and insulated. The rCUP has been specially designed for a full aroma with more flavour and to be easily opened with one hand.

3

Forest friendly

All our nest boxes are made from FSC certified wood which makes sure they are sourced from a well-managed forest from the protection of indigenous people’s rights to tree felling methods. This means you can feel reassured you aren’t going to harm nature in your efforts to provide shelter for local garden birds. Nest boxes aren’t just for the breeding season- birds pack inside them for warmth during the winter months. The record number of birds in one box is 63 wrens!

4

Go for organic

Global Organic Textile Standard cotton cuts out toxic chemical pesticides, saves water and helps care for the communities who grow it. Producers limit their water use to protect wildlife habitats, treat water and meet social criteria such as safe working conditions. The RSPB organic scarves look lovely and feel cosy too! £15 each or two for £20.

5

No palm oil

The RSPB Revive toiletries are inspired by the calming, restorative power of the sea featuring coastal ingredients such as sea kelp, rosemary and sea buckthorn. Our organic peppermint oil lip balm and luxurious hand cream are just the thing to soothe and nourish chapped lips and skin after a day outside in the brutal winter winds. The RSPB’s range is guaranteed free of parabens, phosphates and palm oil. Plus it’s vegan-friendly and made in Cornwall. Ethical pampering for your loved ones (or yourself).

6

Nature friendly

Festoon your Christmas tree with our exquisite range of decorations. Wool felt, ceramic and sustainably sourced wood all look and feel beautiful. Christmas trees become centre of focus in most homes so make it shimmer with our glass birds in their jewel-like colours or add some extra festive cheer with the felt, Fairtrade robins made using traditional needle felting techniques. Organic wool is used as stuffing and the features are hand-embroidered so each one is unique.
