Your Dawn Chorus Festival survival guide

Is this your first experience of the dawn chorus? Not sure what to expect? Think an early start isn’t really for you? We can help you enjoy nature’s finest musical experience to the full. It's an unforgettable experience - and completely worth it.

How to make the most of the dawn chorus

Catch some zzzs

Best to go to bed early the night before, as the early bird catches the best birdsong!

An early alarm call

Set your alarm for early in the morning. For the best dawn chorus, it's best to tune in between 5 and 5.30am. But don't worry if that's not for you - you can hear nature's finest singers throughout the whole morning.

Get out there!

Whether you're heading out to your nearest nature reserve, or simply opening your doors and windows, see if you can be there in person to listen to the beautiful sounds.

What's that bird?

If you're out early, you're likely to hear skylarks, song thrushes, robins and blackbirds. Birds like wrens and warblers prefer a more leisurely start, and often won't start singing until the sun comes up. If you're not sure what you're hearing, you can use our Birdsong Identifier, or try the BirdNet app.

Dawn Chorus Festival LIVE

If the birds aren't singing where you are, remember you can also tune into the Dawn Chorus Festival LIVE with others across the UK.

Enjoy the festival

Take time to just listen to the birdsong. Enjoy the show, and remember - you're joining thousands of others, all listening to the music at the same time. See if you can take a recording of your finest singers.
