Memories of Dove Stone

Dove Stone Memory Bank is a living history project that has recorded people's stories and memories of the Chew Valley and Dove Stone reservoir.

Our 'Memoryscapes'

Each 'Memoryscape' explores a particular aspect of Dove Stone through people recounting their memories.

From the construction of Dove Stone reservoir in the Chew Valley to the reservoir’s connection to Greenfield’s papermill, from the demolition of Ashway Gap house to stories of scouting, climbing and even courting, the Memoryscape trails aim to connect you to this landscape in a new way.

Greenfield Mill and Greenfield Farm

"The paper mill itself had previously been a cotton mill, that’s how it had started life... they were making at one stage there a quarter of the world’s fine tobacco paper..."

Papermill memories and the Dovestone dairy herd, via a look at how times have changed in relation to environmental issues.

Scouting at Chew Brook

"We looked like scouts in those days... We had scout hats on, we all had a scout pole, we dressed like Baden Powell dressed, and our pole would do wonderful things for us...!"

Memories of scouting at Chew. Not to mention what to do if you meet a mad dog on the trail (it's in Scouting for Boys)!

Ashway Gap House

"Its official name was Ashway Gap House but everyone called it the castle."

The story of what was once a hunting lodge built in the style of a Scottish baronial lodge. An interesting history, from being a hospital for recovering WWI soldiers to housing Italian prisoners of war during WWII, but equally remembered simply as a well-loved Gothic building in a beautiful setting.

Chew Valley and the Moor Tops

"Chew Valley started opposite where the Clarence Hotel is, that was Chew Valley drive up there and that took you up to the hills and the moors..."

Memories of courting days, a degraded moorland habitat, old-style reservoir keeping and the Home Guard searchlight at Chew reservoir, looking for German bombers heading to Manchester.

The construction of Dove Stone reservoir

"If you look at all the reservoirs throughout the country many of them have spoiled a beautiful place but also created a beautiful place. Dove Stone reservoir really is quite a beautiful looking site"

Memories of Dove Stone valley before the construction of Dove Stone reservoir and of the process of construction.
