About

Welcome to The Wash, the UK's largest bay and most important estuary for birds. The reserve offers 8 km of trails to help you explore this amazing landscape and the wildlife that calls it home.

We've worked with the Environment Agency to convert 66 hectares of coastal farmland into tidal saltmarsh at Freiston Shore. The saltmarsh is good for watching hunting birds of prey, while Eiders, Red-breasted Mergansers and other diving ducks can be seen offshore during winter.

You'll see excellent views of large groups of waders on the saltwater lagoon at high tide, while Tree Sparrows, Yellowhammers and Skylarks are common around the reserve.

Over on the wet grasslands, look out for the thousands of Dark-bellied Brent Geese and Wigeons foraging. In spring, look out for 'mad' March Hares, and Ringed Plovers in summer.
