It's official. Nature is more under threat than ever before.

The places that nature calls home - where it raises a family and finds food - are being destroyed, exploited and polluted. We're losing far more species than we're gaining.

And nowhere is this trend more clearly highlighted than in the groundbreaking State of Nature report - the first report of its kind to bring together the work of 25 conservation organisations and provide a healthcheck of our wildlife.

The report reveals that 1 in 10 of all the wild plants, insects and animals studied have decreased in number over recent decades. But it also highlights the good work being done to turn the fortunes of our wildlife around.

It's no exaggeration to say that without RSPB nature reserves, the declines of some species could have been much worse. For example, back in 1992 there were 19 'booming' male bitterns in the UK, But last year there were 121, with 39 per cent on RSPB reserves.

Together we'll give nature a home for generations to come.

What we'll be doing

The Homes for Nature Fund will help us act quickly when land comes up for sale. We need to raise £1 million this year to secure 1,800 hectares of land and create the homes that nature so badly needs.

Together we've done so much to protect and save birds and wildlife. But today, nature needs us more than ever. Nature is in crisis. Nature needs us to change before it's too late.

This alarming loss of wildlife is happening because nature's homes are disappearing or being destroyed. If we don't take action right now, we risk our country not being home to skylarks, hedgehogs, red squirrels, puffins and other wildlife that we know and love.

If you make a donation to our fund, we'll be able to keep creating more homes for nature across the UK. And with £500,000 from supporters like you, we can unlock another £500,000 from people like the Heritage Lottery Fund, the EU's LIFE programme, businesses and charitable trusts.

Together, we can give nature a home and double your donation.

Our target

With your help we need to raise £1,000,000

Why we need your help

  1. Thanks to your donations to the fund last year, we were able to buy 2,349 hectares of land - that's a lot of homes for nature! This year we're aiming for another 1,800 hectares. Our target is £1 million.
  2. The money we raise will help us act quickly when land comes up for sale and allow us to create more of the homes that nature so badly needs.
  3. This fund aims to secure 1,800 hectares of wonderful wetlands, woodlands, uplands and other habitats all over the UK. That's an area roughly the size of 2,500 football pitches.
