Adult bittern wading in reedbed at Lee Valley Country Park

More breeding success at Lakenheath

Following on from the successful breeding of Cranes at Lakenheath Fen Reserve it has been announced that another East Anglian speciality, the Bittern, has bred on the Reserve for the first time in 150 years. This is another chapter in the success story of Lakenheath Fen which was created only 14 years ago from farmland and carrot fields to provide a wetland reserve suitable for birds such as the Bittern. East Anglia is home to approx 75% of the UK Bittern population which has shown an increase this year from 75 to 82 calling males.
