A good number of members gathered for the first field trip of 2012. Originally this was to cover Shotley Marsh but the closure of the footpath due to rebuilding the river wall along this stretch, meant we had to change the route. Whilst the weather was good there were few birds to be noted around Shotley. We started by covering the marina and harbour area and viewing Shotley marsh from a distance. Groups of Brent Geese were noted on the move along with Cormorant, Shelduck and the regular gull species. A few Brent Geese were noted on Shotley marsh but little else due to the sea wall work and dry conditions. Good views were had of a female Reed Bunting and Redwing. We then moved to look at Erwarton Bay. There were few birds here with even the large flock of Wigeon not showing. A chilly wind saw the party return to their cars fairly quickly after what had been a pleasant morning but with few birds noted.
