Welney is one of the jewels in the crown of the WWT reserves offering a superb winter spectacle with the highlight being the superb herd of wintering wild swans as well as a range of geese and waders.

As usual with WWT there is a superb visitor centre with café and shop.

Chris Bailey has been the manager of Hope farm for the past 3 years. The RSPB bought this arable farm in 1999 with the aim of showing farmers and policy makers that farming can be both profitable and help wildlife - hoping to reverse the decline in farmland birds especially the skylark.

Old Moor RSPB shows just what can be done with abandoned industrial sites and it has turned up some excellent birds recently including Little Swift. We should see a good range of wintering birds on the scrapes.

In the afternoon we will go to Blacktoft to see more wintering waders, geese and raptors.

Old Moor has a good visitor centre and café, Blacktoft toilets only.

Snettisham is in a perfect position to attract a good range of waders, wildfowl and passerines. When we visit most of the spring migrants should be in, waders will be in summer plumage and we should see some interesting breeding birds such as Mediterranean gull.

There is no visitor centre but there is a nearby café and caravan park shop.

Bird Walk at Ulverscroft Manor & Grange

Location: Drive to Copt Oak and turn by the Restaurant towards Markfield. After 1 mile turn left onto Priory Lane. Turn into Ulverscroft Manor and park in the car park. SK492112

The walks are in term-time but if any children join us they must be looked after by an adult. Walking distance does not exceed 2 or 3 miles. While the walks do not involve strenuous climbs there are some uphill sections and some rough or marshy paths. You are strongly advised to wear boots or good walking shoes.

Here we will see a good range of woodland and upland birds in a beautiful setting. We should see Red Kite, Raven, Pied Flycatcher, Wood Warbler and Redstart amongst others. There are a variety of walks and habitiats to explore here.
